Septic Systems are very common in rural areas where it is not economical to have a centralized public sewer system. The septic system is an underground system which uses a combination of nature and technology to treat waste from the home. Waste commonly comes from the kitchen drains, laundry, sinks, the toilet, bathtubs and more. Sump pump water should not be drained into the septic system.

How do you know if you have a sewage system? The easiest way is to look at your water bill and check for a sewage bill. If there is no mention of a sewage charge on your bill or if you do not receive a wastewater charge of any kind (and you do not have a lagoon or open pit system) then chances are you have a septic system.

The septic system is used to help dispose of unwanted waste from your home (see the list above for sources). The system is underground, so chances are you would not notice it unless you really wanted to locate it. There may be two lids visible in your yard. This would be where the tank is located and where the system can be pumped out during an inspection.
